Just recently the International Centre for Sports Studies published a report titled “Performance analysis: Best clubs and players of the big-5 league season”. This report was compiled by Drs Raffaele Poli, Loic Ravenel and Roger Besson and details their rankings of Football teams and players within the top five leagues in Europe and how they were measured.

Football teams were measured on four key areas:

1. Dangerousness

Dangerousness

2. Grip on the game

Grip on the game

3. Duelling

Duelling

Set play

Dangerousness is the measure of volume and quality of shots attempted and conceded. Grip on the game refers to the amount of passes and where on the pitch they occurred or conceded. Duelling takes into account all the dribbles and tackles that took place. Lastly set play measures the effectiveness of free-kicks and corners.

After determining the strengths and weaknesses of a team the paper then analyses player performances. The analysis rates player’s individual contribution to their teams, more simply put the effect they have on the team.

Player performance is measured by:

1. Shooting

2. Chance creation

3. Take on

4. Distribution

5. Recovery

6. Rigour

KPIs per position

Shooting refers to the ability to convert goal scoring opportunities. Chance creation is the ability to supply your teammate with a goal scoring opportunity. Take on refers to a player skilfulness to create a threatening situation by successfully challenging opponent/s. Distribution is artistry of maintaining possession through effective passing. Recovery and Rigour measure the ability of a player to minimize goal scoring opportunities of their opponents by inceptions and strength in contests.
