Archie Thompson played an instrumental role in his teams 3-0 romping of the in-form Perth Glory. A double to Berisha and a goal to Finkler gave Victory the win, however it was Thompson who set up 2 of the 3 goals. The former Twin City Wanderer delivered a stellar pass to play in Berisha leaving the team up 2-0 mid-way through the second half. The final goal went to Berisha from the penalty spot after once again Thompson penetrated the box and was brought down unfairly by Glory goalkeeper Danny Vukovic. It capped off a remarkable performance for the seemingly ageless Thompson who could have added to the score, hitting the cross bar after beating the offside trap early in the game.
Overseas and Josh Kennedy’s Nagoya Grampus has qualified for the quarter-final stages of the Emperors Cup; our FFA Cup equivalent. Nagoya only needed the one goal to defeat their division two opposition, courtesy of Leandro Domingues in the 75th minute. This weekend they will face mid table Yokohama in the league needing a win to keep them clear of the relegation zone.
Finally, The W-league kicks off this weekend and Amy Chapman’s Brisbane have been named among the favourites for this seasons title. The Roar finished 4th last season and eventually lost the grand final to Melbourne Victory. However with Chapman not too far away and a host of other players returning from injury, their title credentials are looking positive. Throw in being able to retain the FIFA Womens player of 2013, Goalkeeper Nadine Angerer, and Brisbane look like a force to be reckoned with. Their first match will be on Sunday against Perth in Western Australia.
