WODONGA TAFE and La Trobe University are on the Murray United bandwagon.
Yesterday the Border’s fledgling Premier League franchise launched its future with the announcement of its foundation sponsors and switched on its website.
More than 100 guests including politicians, business leaders, representatives from Football Federation Victoria and others were on hand for the club’s official launch at Huon Hill Hotel.
Murray United chairman Mark Byatt said it was a major milestone.
“This is a chance for people to see just how far we have come in a very short time,” he said.
“Here today, we are seeing history in the making — the launch of a National Premier League club for this region, which includes southern NSW and Northern Victoria, is a milestone in the region’s sporting history.
“The board has been extremely active in the establishment phase of the club to date and as chair I would say we have achieved a lot in a very short time.
“We also welcome on board Wodonga TAFE and Latrobe University as foundation sponsors in what we hope is a long and fruitful partnership.
“Today’s launch is another key indicator in delivering NPL to the region.”
Murray United will join Premier League 1 next year with at least eight teams including a marquee open men’s side.
Women’s soccer may also be added to the newly licensed club.
Byatt said yesterday’s announcement was the first of many expected in the coming months.
“The club is still to confirm the official player strips … and when finalised the strips, both home and away, will be released,” he said.
“And while we have appointed a technical director we are also very close to a decision on the senior coaching position with four candidates on the Border this weekend.”
Byatt said the NPL club would offer a new avenue to soccer’s elite competitions.
