It’s been quite the journey getting here, but this weekend, history will finally be made with Murray United FC taking to the pitch for the first time in an official capacity. Facing off against Melbourne team Box Hill United, the imminent launch of our region into the NPL has got fans of the world game abuzz as we see this new chapter in football begin.
Having completed a comprehensive pre-season, playing games against some of Victoria’s top teams (Bentleigh, North Geelong, Port Melbourne), Murray United has surprised many with their skill, determination and teamwork. However the true test is almost here, a test that our boys eagerly await.
Word from the clubroom is that the last four weeks of training have been very positive. Tweaking playing positions, cementing understandings of game day roles, and creating a solid playing unit has been a major focus.
MUFC Senior Coach Mick Richards said “We have learnt a lot through pre-season training and the games played. We certainly have surprised other clubs and even ourselves at times. There is a very high demand on positive attitude and work rate, all the boys will continue this going into this season.”
With the entire coaching staff working tirelessly on the tactical elements of this weekend’s match, the playing and coaching group are very confident they are prepared for any challenge Box Hill can throw at them.
When asked what the boys want to get out of the match this weekend, MUFC Captain Ryan Giles said “A strong first up performance. We are confident that with the right attitude, effort and game play, we have every chance to get the points.”
Having finished third in the NPL1 last year, 2015 sees Box Hill in a rebuilding phase after the resignation of their head coach of four years, and seeing 11 of their players move to various NPL clubs. With strong young-blood moving up from within their own ranks, as well as state league players moving into the NPL1 competition for the first time, the relatively new Box Hill squad is keen to impress.
Over the preseason, Box Hill senior coach Alfredo Constantino focused on player development and ensuring his team plays attractive football. The attacking style of play Box Hill is known for, will test the Murray United defence.
Box Hill players to look out for include Estonian U21 International, Stan Goldberg, 18 year old Nikola Surdoski and the no nonsense centre back and captain, Michael Godfrey, who will lead the team from defence.
