The Australian female national team have had a 1-1 draw with Sweden in their last game of the group stage. With three points already, the Matildas will be progressing to the next stage of the tournament after the USA defeated Nigeria 1-0.
Having faced a tough first test against last world cup runners up USA losing 3-1 in a match which could have gone either way. The Matildas regained their form with a 2-0 win over Nigeria, thanks to clinical finishing from Kyah Simon.
The Matildas will face South American power house Brazil in the round of 16. Brazil have already qualified top of Group E with a match in hand. Australia will need to stop the possession game of the Brazilians who have held around 60% possession in both their matches.
While the Socceroos got off to a winning start in Dolen Omurzakov Stadium in Bishkek against Kyrgystan. The Bishkek pitch may of limited Australia’s ability to play the style of football they are use too. In saying this the Australian defense called on Matt Ryan (GK) and the side netting too many times as they scrapped their way to a 2-1 win. Poor goalkeeping allowed Jedinak’s 1st minute freekick through and a well taken Tommy Oar goal made it 2-0, but a controversial “Hand of God” like goal brought Kyrgystan within one all be it in the 92nd minute.
